Heather & Rick in Maui, HI
A white reception tent near the ceremony site featured local fave drink Lava Flows, and Coronas, at the groom‘s request.
The couple exchanged vows under the shade of a giant monkeypod tree just yards from the ocean at the Olowalu Plantation House. The aisle was sprinkled with pink and white orchids, and Heather, in an exquisite spaghetti-strap Badgley Mischka gown with an organza layer and tiny silver flower-shaped crystals, adorned her updo with orchids as well.
The Hawaiian minister blew a conch to signal the bride‘s arrival and the start of the traditional Hawaiian ceremony. The couple exited to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," from The Wizard of Oz -- "in Hawaiian style," she adds.
White Chinese lanterns and tiki torches provided soft ambient light for Heather and Rick‘s first dance.
For her walk down the aisle, Heather carried a pink (the wedding‘s prime hue) bouquet that included calla lilies, tulips, peonies, and seashells.
A musical duo and hula dancer entertained the guests while they took their seats under the swaying palm trees.
Keeping with their island theme, Heather and Rick‘s three-tiered wedding cake featured delectable details -- seashells!
Seashells and candles covered the tables, which each featured a different tropical flower arrangement.

After graduation the elementary school teachers took positions in two faraway lands -- Heather in New Zealand; Rick in Japan. An elaborate long-distance courtship took place -- phone calls, letters, and countless mix tapes of love songs crossed the ocean. "It was a very romantic time in our lives," Rick recalls. And love prevailed. After one year apart, Rick moved to New Zealand, and four years later he proposed in their hometown of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
