Newlyweds for 1389 days!
ABOUT KRISTEN
I am currently a senior at Georgia State University. After completing my internship this fall semester, I will finally graduate in December. I am planning on taking a year off from school to just enjoy being married, but will hopefully start law school in the Fall of 2007. I am hoping to practice family law.
ABOUT CRAIG
Craig is in the U.S. Army, stationed out of Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia. He is originally from Louisiana. But is currently in Iraq on his second deployment.
HOW WE MET
We cringe and point at each other to tell the story everytime someone asks us this question because you never know what kind of blank stare you will get back from the person who asked...
We actually met in a chatroom on Yahoo. I had just watched You've Got Mail one night last summer, couldn't fall asleep, and got the random idea to go into it. Neither one of us knew what we were doing so we ended up talking to each other on instant messenger for hours. We e-mailed each other for a month or so and then he got the nerve to call me. It got to the point where we were talking everyday and knew each other really well.
He had tried to meet me a couple of times and I always chickened out.
My sorority sister's mom passed away and the viewing was in Columbus. My best friend Jamie and I headed down after school one afternoon to pay our respects, so I called Craig and told him I was comng a little early. He was going to the firing range that afternoon for work, but before he went he met Jamie and I at the RaceTrac dressed his camo. Then we met again later at the Dairy Queen. (Yes, how romantic.) Everything just clicked. Leading up to his deployment we spent every minute of time possible together. I was either driving to Columbus or he was coming up to Atlanta on the weekends.
WHEN WE GOT ENGAGED
June 18, 2005
HOW IT HAPPENED
Over New Years, I went to Louisiana to spend as much time with Craig as possible before he depolyed a few weeks later. On New Year's Eve, we were sitting on a dock overlooking Ouachita River outside of his friends condo. He started by asking me if I would wait on him this next year while he was away. And when I told him yes, he told me he would marry me that minute if he didn't have to turn right around and leave me. We talked about a lot that night involving our future.
While he was home on leave from Iraq, I flew to Louisiana to be with him. After five months of being apart, he picked me up at the airport on the 18th of June. We spent the day just being together and went to dinner together that night. On our way back from dinner he asked me if I want to go down to the dock we spent New Years on. So when he mentioned going there I thought-- oh my gosh he's going to propose there. I don't know my way around his town at all but I know once you get to the paper mill, his mom's house is about 5 miles down the road. So when I saw the paper mill I was thinking "why aren't we going to the dock!?" I think I might have started pouting (not intentionally it just kinda worked out like that..haha). Craig, of course, called me out on it.
So we pull up to his mom's house and I go to get out on his side of the truck cause I sat in the middle to be next to him. But he didn't move. And he says, "Baby can you reach behind the seat and get those screws back there for me?" I'm thinking what do you need screws for but I reach back there and fish around for them anyways (annoyed that he even brought up the dock but didn't take me there...haha) and I pull out the tape measurer. Put that back and fish around in the pocket behind the seat some more (still not realizing what is going on). And I pull out the black box and freaked out! I opened his hand up and gave it back to him and started bawling like a baby. He said, "You don't want it?" We sat there seriously hugging for a good five minutes. I was crying and laughing like a little girl at the same time and he hadn't even opened up the box yet. He told me he loved me and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. It was awesome and for someone who knew it was kind of coming he managed to make it a total shock for me.
WHEN & WHERE
April 22, 2006
ABOUT THE BIG DAY
Since Craig is in the military and currently deployed in Iraq, this is just a tentative date. (I had to enter a date in order to make the website.) He could possibly come home anywhere from December to June of next year, but he seems to think he'll be home by January. So we are hoping March or April will work out.
We are getting married at my aunt and uncle's house in Draketown, Georgia. It is almost at the Alabama line, off of I-20. The house is gorgeous on 27 acres of land. It is almost finished being built. The reception will be held here also.
