LAUREL ANN CARVALHO & PAUL WHITLOCK FEBRUARY 7, 2009 Newlyweds for 367 days! ABOUT LAUREL ANN Laurel Ann is a senior at the University of Florida majoring in anthropology, with a specialization in archaeology and will be graduating in December 2008. She has been playing clarinet for longer than is healthy for her sanity and is also a geek in all aspects. Following the wedding, she intends to apply to either law school or graduate school for archaeology. ABOUT PAUL Paul just finished last semester at UF. He is also a geek in all ways and enjoys long walks. Paul has also lost his sanity, but for completely different reason. His hobbies include computer, biking, and gaming. HOW WE MET At the University of Florida in Fall 2004. Laurel Ann hated Paul at first, but they soon grew inseparable. Then, there was rum.

In more detail, they had a mutual group of friends their first year at UF. At first, they clashed, being so ridiculously similar, it was not surprising. Eventually, however, they bonded and Paul one day told Laurel Ann that a friend of his said they should date, and asked her what she thought. She said this was a good idea, and then told him that was the lamest way to ask someone out ever.

However, fate conspired against them and they broke up about 5 months later. In the years to come, after some "healing time" after the break-up, they grew closer and, although they dated other people, found themselves spending more time with each other than with the people they were dating. Fate found them both single and they became inseparable again. On July 4, 2007, Laurel Ann was staying over at Paul's apartment for a week in the archaeology lab when she had no living space in Gainesville. She suggested that, since it was a holiday, they ought to mix some rum and cokes and drink and relax.

Within the next two hours, an entire bottle of rum magically disappeared. A very woozy Paul, sitting at this desk, said the magical words that started it all (again): "I'm still in love with you... was that out loud?" From then, it's all history!
WHEN WE GOT ENGAGED December 31, 2007 HOW IT HAPPENED It was New Years Eve, just before midnight, when Paul coaxed Laurel Ann out onto the pool deck of her parents' house (where, incidentally, they also shared their first kiss). He produced a dozen red roses, hidden on the porch, each with a piece of paper attached. After a brief lighting snafu, he handed each rose to Laurel Ann (since she couldn't figure out the order herself) and told her to read them out loud. Each strip of paper had a poetic memory of their relationship, in chronological order, with rose number twelve being when Paul proposed and Laurel Ann said "yes." Which, of course, she did. Through a great many tears. He then placed upon her finger the most perfect ring in the history of the world and they kissed as a newly engaged couple right at midnight.

The Roses:

I once knew a girl on the first day she tried to hide from me (I thought you said he was just here)

On the second she spent all her time with me (I like that we are both insomniacs)

I watched movies while she slept near me (I’m awake)

Played cards when she was awake (You always forget that)

We made mistakes (Are you leaving me?)

But learned to grow (so were still friends *nods*)

And rum helped it along (I love you too)

I fell in love ( I think I want to be with you forever)

And now things work (I think that was our last big problem)

Now here at the place of out first kiss (I usually don’t like kissing people)

As we spend the holidays together (Merry Christmas)

I ask you (Yes!)
