AMY BROWN & BENJIE HUGHES NOVEMBER 21, 2008 Newlyweds for 365 days! ABOUT AMY Amy just finished her masters degree at Wheaton College in General History of Christianity. She works part time at Warehouse Church in downtown Aurora. She is looking forward to not having two separate grocery purchases. ABOUT BENJIE Benjie owns Backthird Audio in downtown Aurora. He leads the Total Package (a rocking wedding and event band), books various musicians and runs a recording studio. He is looking forward to not living where he works. HOW WE MET We were introduced many times by mutual friends, but our first real conversation was an accidental Valentine's Day dinner. It's a fun story...you should ask us about it! WHEN WE GOT ENGAGED July 10, 2008 HOW IT HAPPENED Benjie has been sending me letters since May with the express purpose of there being 7 of them and the last one being the lead in for the proposal. Each letter was expressing a quality about me that he loves and expounding on why. At the end of each it always said:

"Please be mine. -- Benjie"

I wasn't expecting it right now since his brother is getting married in a couple of weeks, so when he took me out for our anniversary I had no idea. He told me to dress all casual, but pretty and that we would be remembering stuff our our relationship. We were supposed to go the Arboretum (pretty place with lots of pretty trees), but it monsooned. So he went to plan B and set up a picnic in his sister's kitchen area. He had bread and cheese and wine and grapes. So we ate and remembered.
He had these pieces of paper with titles on them like "trips we've taken," "meals we've shared," "people we've met," and "unexpected surprises." So we spent time remembering. It was glorious and then he asked me which of the 7 letters was my favorite. I hadn't kept count. I asked, "why 7?" He said with a wink, "because it's the number of completion." You'd think i would have gotten it then, but newsflash...Amy is super gullible.
So then we went through and remembered the letters. We got to six. I asked him if we had forgotten any. He said no and that the last one was in the tree. Now remember we were supposed to be under a tree at the time. It just so happens, however, that his sister has a beautiful picture of a tree on their wall. So I waited a moment...and then i got up and got the letter. I stood facing him and opened it.
It was shorter than the rest, but it talked about how each letter has said, "please be mine," but this one was asking me to be his for keeps, for good and for always. Then it asked if I was ready...then I started shaking.
He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was so beside myself with crying and laughing, but I managed to say "yes, of course, with all of my heart!" Then he gave me the ring...which....wow! He knew my size and kind of what I wanted, but he improved on it!
Then we sat for a while and just drank in the moment (oh and it got sunny right at that moment). Then he told me that he has been wanting to kiss me for months...so then...at 28 I got my first kiss from my best friend and love of my life. It was my dream that that would be when it happened, but he didn't even know that! Bully for him! Then we prayed together. Then he told me that his sister and and brother in law were coming over for champagne. Then everyone from the area that I know and love started trickling in. My engagement party came to me! So he had planned a beautiful private time and then community time. It was lovely!
